HubSpot Says You Should Delete Your Contact Us Form? What!?

As an iPhone 4 user, one of my favorite apps is the Marketing Profs app. The app publishes mobile friendly, mini articles you can read in 60 seconds or less. The articles cover a range of marketing topics, from PR to SEO and everything in between. I like checking out an article really quick while I’m waiting in line or just have a minute to kill.

Anyway, the other day I was reading an article on there that was a condensed version of the HubSpot post “5 Items to Delete From Your Website Today.” The article caught my attention because most articles offer advice on things you should add to your website, not things to take away. So, of course, I gave it a read.

The article started out good enough, encouraging readers to get rid of complicated animations, industry jargon, and irrelevant, slow-loading images. Okay, I can agree with that. Then, I got to point #4. Point #4 said long pages have no place on your website. I disagree, but that’s a topic for another post.

But it was the 5th point that really made me give an audible “WTF?!” The author said to get rid of contact us forms from your website. He flat out claims “contact us forms don’t work”, and says they don’t attract qualified leads but instead “mostly attract spam.”

Again, I give a loud “WTF?!”

And I’m not alone. The majority of the comments came from people like me who were in disbelief that a well-respected marketing blog would be dishing out such terrible and flat-out wrong advice.

First, let me tackle his claim that contact us forms “don’t work.” Says who? What evidence do you have to support that? I can tell you that the contact us forms on my website generate several quality leads every single week. I can also point to the countless websites of my clients who have earned more new business than they thought possible through their contact us form.

He also says the forms “mostly attract spam.” BS. Honestly, I can’t remember the last spam message that I received through my contact form. If I had to estimate, I’d say less than 5% of the messages I receive through my contact form come from spambots. And guess what? A spam message takes all of 1 second to delete. That’s a pretty small price to pay for the thousands of dollars in new business my contact us forms have generated for me. Not to mention, there are things you can do to combat contact form spam (CAPTCHA, etc.).

Additionally, contact forms do a good job of pre-screening candidates for me. I get all the important information I need from that form, and it’s clear to me which people are truly good potential clients and which ones are a waste of my time.

The simple truth is that in every experience I’ve ever had, contact us forms have been very useful. Not only do they give visitors a way to take action from whatever page they’re on, but the forms actually stand out and draw visual attention to them. It’s a part of the call to action, and visitors’ eyes are drawn to them. It’s far easier for them to fill out a short contact form on the landing page than to click over to my contact page, hunt down my info, and contact me through there.

And even if they decide not to use the contact form, giving them the option just offers them another way of getting in touch with me. The easier you are to contact, the more people will contact you. It’s all about making things as simple for the visitor as possible.
