Back in May, during the second day of Google I/O 2009, Google’s Vice President of Engineering, Vic Gundotra introduced a brand new personal and open sourced communication and collaboration tool called Google Wave. This brand new tool was created by two brothers (Lars and Jens Rasmussen) who were also the creators of Google Maps.

Lars and Jens have been working on Google Wave for the past few years. But the exciting part is that it’s going to be available to the public later this year. Lars explained that the primary reason why Google Wave was unveiled during such an early stage was because they are looking for developers to tap into their API and hopefully start developing products while Google continues to get ready for launch.

Fortunately for those reading this post who didn’t attend Google I/O 2009, the entire Google Wave presentation was recorded and uploaded to YouTube. Stephanie Hannon co-presented the three part presentation which illustrates the product, the platform it resides on, and the protocol, or as Hannon referred to it as the “Three P’s.”

So what is Google Wave? Lars Rasmussen explained first by summarizing our current and mainstream technologies: Email, Blogging, Social Networking, Wikis, Instant Messengers, and so forth. And in short, he then explained that Google Wave is a mashup of everything you see today but with mass improvements. Needless to say, Google Wave, once public, may have some huge effects on site optimization, social networking, and online publishing. If time is available, I strongly recommend watching the 1 Hr and 20 Min video recording of the Google Wave presentation. As a site owner, SEO adjustments soon may be needed.  (more…)
