How to Find Your Voice as a Blogger
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009In previous posts, I’ve talked about how important it is to stand out as a blogger. No matter what niche you’re in, chances are there are several (hundreds, even thousands) other bloggers already covering the same topics.
That’s why finding your voice as a blogger is so important. Your voice is the thing that will separate you from everybody else. It’s the thing that readers will connect with and that will keep them coming back time and time again.
So, just how do you go about finding your blogging voice? Here are some tips to help you on this journey.
1. Forget about the rules—Apologies to all of my former grammar teachers, but the first thing you need to do is forget about all of the rules of writing for a little while. Don’t be afraid to use a fragment here and there. Don’t worry about letting some slang slip into your writing. After all, this is blogging, not a senior thesis. If you get too caught up in adhering to all of the rules, your voice will be choked out, causing your blog to feel impersonal and stiff.
2. Write now. Edit later—Once you start writing a blog, try to get in the zone, and stay there for as long as you can. Don’t fall into the trap of writing a sentence and editing it, over and over again. Write everything out now, and edit it later. This allows you to get into a flow, causing your natural voice to seep out.
