Another thing that irks me is when someone sends me a link exchange request when their site is completely unrelated to my business. I think explaining why the link exchange will benefit the website owner is probably the most important point here. I’m not going to exchange links with someone if I don’t see anything benefit in it for me. I mean what would be the point?

I am in the real estate industry. If I am requesting a link I usually start by Commenting on their site and asking questions about their local market.Then I slip in the link question.

Same as when building my Sphere of influence – You need to build some sort of rapport first.
