I knew this one was going to be controversial. Authority means more than linking, I should think. If the Times sends someone to be embedded in Afghanistan, I think there's an argument that this article should have a good ranking, even if it's outlinked by a site that may not be as useful or informative.

There are arguments against this, and the link-voting system is more democratic, but the Times does have a point. Google's not perfect - crap comes up in Google, sometimes in the first results. So tweaking the algorithm isn't going to crush the whole system. I think what this boils down to is a broader definition of the term "authority."

The NYT still puts too much content behind a login wall. That's called "we don't want it in Google."

This is like the whining from Britannica that their objectively horrible web page wasn't ranking higher than Wikipedia. Google is an index of web pages, and their site was awful.

Also, remember that Wikipedia hasn't lifted a finger to get Google rank. We just write a site full of information presented as best as possible. And what do you know, it works. Good, that.

I entirely disagree with you. Not because I'm anti-Major Media. But, Google isn't showing Wikipedia favoritism, that's just how it works. Surely you get SEO, as I read this blog regularly. The Times and other news sources will rank higher if people link to them more. If Twitter gets linked to more, well, that's what will show up. If The Times can't generate content that people feel strongly enough to link to, I see no good reason to give the any sort of advantage. This is how and why Google works, because it is fair to ALL publications, regardless of status. If they changed that, it would be a real shame.
