The rumors are true. Google is releasing a new operating system called Chrome OS and will be available in the second half of 2010.

The new operating system is targeting the netbook market. It is a very small, simple, and extremely fast operating system designed heavily for web surfers. Because it is created by Google, the operating system will come with most of Google’s services such as Gmail, Docs, and Calendar. It is Google’s goal to have a user on the web in a matter of seconds.

Google Chrome OS isn’t just for netbooks. The operating system can be installed on most all types of computers. And the great news is Google Chrome OS is going to be free. The question is if Google Chrome OS can put a dent in the OS market. Can Google OS compete against Microsoft or Apple?

It is nice to see another alternative operating system start to surface. It seems like most people who use Windows have trouble. Those who use Windows sometimes tend to try Linux. Linux is complicated to work with for inexperienced users. And then there is the group of Apple users. And will Apple, in my opinion, pretty much anyone that purchases an Apple computer never switches back.

So what is your opinion about Google Chrome OS? How well do you think this new OS will do? Can Google OS ever beat Apple OS X? Better yet, can Google OS become more popular than Windows itself?

Can it compete? That’s a vague question. It’s going to require an easy to use interface, consistent postive support, vendor support, retail support… I could go on. But most importantly if google is trying to capitalize on the netbook crowd then they may have a chance of market penetration. However for those consumers that still use their pc’s for much more than just internet… Will chrome be efficient enough for them? How will it handle the entertainment aspects of computing? Pictures, Music, Video, gaming? I love the chrome browser but a complete OS is a different story. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

My thoughts on Google OS are this. I noticed how the media plays like its “so different and strange” then anything Google has done before. In my opinion its no stranger than when M$ announced they would be making the Xbox and everyone was like doesn’t M$ only do software what do they know about game hardware. And yet even I a faithful linux user owns a 360. There seems to be an underlying reiteration that Chrome will be free. Of course it will be free. For the reasons that if they charged something for a stripped down OS it would be harder to steal people away from M$. Also since it is based on the Linux Kernel which is free to distribute they wouldn’t have to pay any royalties to Linus the creator who himself said that any distributions of Linux (and yes Chrome is now going to be a distribution of Linux,) should remain free. I will probably dual install my current OS PC/OS Linux 2009 with Google Chrome when it arrives. I hope that they make a live disc (a bootable disc that will boot the OS and run it from the disc without installing it.) That way people can try it first. Well that’s all my thoughts.

“Linux is complicated to work with for inexperienced users.” NOT true. Try Ubuntu or any other friendly distribution. And by the way Google Chrome OS, from what I read here http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html is another linux distribution. “Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel.” so it is a LINUX

I have great hope for that Chrome O/S in my Acer Aspire One. As soon as it is available, I am willing to try it. I do think that the O/S correspond to what I need as O/S go. I am a fan of Google, use the Chrome browser, Calender and iGoogle homepage. I use my AAO to surf the Net while mobile so I am biased toward Google stuff so I am a market target for them but I dont think I will be the only one, at least not in the netbook category. As for home desktop, that, I dont know.

Looking forward to a new OS. Things for Google to keep in mind. Absolutely NO Digital Rights Management!!!!! Must look and feel like Windows or a Mac. No hidden features that turn into gotcha’s.

    Looking forward to trying it.

“Can Google OS ever beat Apple OS X?”

Its Google we are talking about here! Chrome has beaten Opera/Safari and others in a matter of days. Answer: ofc it will!

With three major failures in Vista, I am looking at the alternatives. Chrome is the best hope but Mac Snow Leopard is a viable candidate. I still think Solaris and Linux can be made into a competitor for the home market. As for Windows System 7, no thanks. Microsoft has exhausted my patience and I do not wish to continue with the arrogance, stupidity, greed and incompetence that Microsoft represents in its OS products. I have no confidence in them. It is time to move on and Google seems to understand what to do.

Have a dual boot … windows and ubuntu thanks to wubi.
Wondering if the new google os will use wubi to make a triple boot system. would be great.
Had test drove the windows 7 beta and found poor or no support for drivers, espesially old popular ones like soundblaster … you really need a new computer for support. Linux has support for much more hardware and doesn’t require you to search for drivers like windows does.

uhmm…. there have been other alternatives to Windows and Mac OS for a really long time. Chrome is just another Linux distro… just better because Google obviously has more funding, partners, and probably will have fancy integration with all of their web apps. I’m looking forward to it, don’t get me wrong… but it’s nothing “new” per-say.
