Being seen as an expert in your field is a good way to win the trust of your customers and earn their business. Of course, not everyone has what it takes to be an expert. It’s something you have to work toward, and you must possess certain skills and characteristics.
Here are some of the main characteristics you need to have to be considered an expert.
- Knowledge—By definition, an expert is someone who has special skill or knowledge in a particular field. If you don’t know your subject matter, and I mean really know it, you’re not an expert. It’s not enough to know the basics, you have to know more than almost everyone else in your industry. You have to live and breathe your subject of interest.
- Proven experience—I can sit here all day long and share copywriting and marketing advice with you, but if I’d never actually worked on any campaigns, would you take anything I said seriously? Of course not. It’s not enough to have the knowledge, you have to also know how to put it to work. Otherwise, your words will carry no weight.
- Current and future insight—No matter what industry you’re in, things are always changing. If you’re still spreading information that was relevant 20 years ago, you’re out of touch and no longer an expert. You have to stay on the cutting edge of your industry, and you have to be constantly looking to the future, predicting what’s coming next.
