A Few Tricks for Getting More from Your Top Referral Sources
Any time I talk to my friends and family about my copywriting business, I inevitably get asked the question “How do customers find you?” And while my website ranks well and generates several quality leads each week, I also get a lot of business from referrals.
I learned about the power of referral marketing very early on. Sure, I used to be a little scared to ask my clients to refer clients to me, but I quickly realized that people actually love to give referrals. They enjoy the feeling of helping your business grow, and they also like being a good resource for their friends to turn to when they need help finding a reputable service provider. It strokes their ego.
Over the years, I’ve learned a few tricks for getting more from my top referral sources. Here are some of my favorite tactics:
- Educate the client—Let your clients know exactly what type of referral you’re looking for. Clearly identify who your ideal client is. Also, make sure your clients understand your main message (who you are, what you do, what makes your company special, etc.). This creates consistency in your branding and builds trust with your target market.
- Give them referral materials—The easier it is for someone to give you a referral, the more referrals you’ll get. Make sure your top referral sources have a few copies of your business cards on hand. Give them promotional products with your company’s info stamped on them. You can even give them little referral cards they can send to people who need your products or services.
- Refer people to them whenever possible—It’s a time-tested concept that applies to nearly everything in life. If you want to receive something, give something. Send a little business to your clients whenever you can, and they’ll be much likelier to return the favor in the future.
- Follow up and thank them for referrals—Keep your referral sources involved in the process. Whenever they send a prospect your way, let them know how things went. And thank them when one of their referrals turns into a customer.
