Guest Posting on Blogs For Link Building
If you are trying to build links that point back to your blog or website one of the most powerful ways you can do that is by offering to write content on other blogs. This is a little different than landing a freelance writing job because your offer is to help bloggers by writing content on their blog for free. While this might not sound like a very good deal for you, it really is.
Paying for links is risky. Google has a good sniffer for spotting paid or sponsored links. Doing link exchanges, especially blogroll exchanges is proving to not have much value. Ordering sponsored posts is very risky because you then put your site on Google’s radar. So really what option do you have left?
The answer is in writing guest posts. It is a safe and very natural / organic way to score powerful backlinks to your blog or website. Consider this too. When you publish content on other blogs, you are in complete control of the link building process. You are in complete control of how you want to word your content and shape and mold your links pointing back to your site. In other words, writing guest posts on other blogs gives you the ability to take a blank piece of digital paper and turn it into anything you want.
Guest posting on other blogs has other benefits as well. For one, you’ll find that you have an endless supply of blogs where you can publish your content on. Most bloggers struggle for material. Just like a journalist or a columnist, often bloggers struggle from writers block and totally enjoy it when someone offers to provide them with killer content.
Another benefit is the fact that not only can you build links by writing the content, you can also take advantage of the opportunity and use the post to sell yourself to readers of the blog you are publishing on. This gives you an amazing opportunity to increase the number of regular reader who read your own blog or website.
The only disadvantage I can think of is the amount of time you need to invest into writing content. One thing about that though is I believe that you always get back when you put in. Meaning, if you invest the time into writing quality content on other blogs, your return will be great as well.
Contact a few blog authors and you’ll be surprised to discover how many of them will contact you back having a strong interest in having you write a post for them. I know for a fact that when people contact me, I get excited because I know that my nightly post is covered and I can have a little free time to do something else. My advice to you when you do contact bloggers is to present yourself well. Be honest and explain what you want to do and what are you are willing to do for them in exchange. Writing content on other blogs is mutual exchange. You give the blogger a night off from having to write and they give you a medium to spread the word about your own blog or website.

This is definitely something I want to get into. I started accepting guests in ’08, so I’d like to start guesting (assuming that’s a word) in ’09.
I think the main problem people have, is knowing you should provide some of your “best stuff” in a guest post, but no one wants to give it up.

I have had a few bloggers guest post on my blog but I’ve yet to go guest posting on other blogs. Guess it’s about time I do so.
Thanks for the reminder.

Gary,
I couldn't agree w/ this one more. There are sooo many positive benefits to guest blogging that it behooves all bloggers to do at least some guest posting.
One additional point I touched on in a guest post The 7 Reasons Every Blogger Should Be Guest Posting
Something I like to call “social media synergy”
FTA: “Different Social Networks and Reach: Each of the bloggers may utilize different social networks, and have varying amounts of reach on each one. For example, my main social networks are on Twitter, StumbleUpon, Facebook and Blog Catalogue. Although I don’t have the strongest presence on Digg, I can work with a guest blogger that does (but doesn’t necessarily have a strong StumbleUpon profile). Since we will both be trying to promote each guest post through our various social networks, our combined efforts will give our content a farther reach.”
Some things have changed since that was published but the point remains the same. Basically the idea is both bloggers will usually promote the guest post.

Gary,
This is a great post and something I never have given much thought to. It seems quite a step up from simply trading links (something I have heard much more of). Thanks.

I disagree with the notion of blog posting as a link building source. In my experiences, it serves as a fantastic way to bring visitors who read blogs to your site, but as far as SEO, it's not worth it for a person to go out and post to simply get a backlink.
Quality content is appreciated by Google, but these days, BS is snuffed out like that *snap*.

Sometimes such things as that kind of linkbuilding is becoming a real disaster as SEO publishers-beginners begin spaming.Everybody should be aware of it!

Hah!
I've never really thought about it that way – but it's so true. Both bloggers will profit by having that post read, so it just makes sense that both would put effort into promoting it.
I've always found guest blogging to be a much better promotion tool than commenting. Sure, it takes longer and you have to put in more effort, but that effort really pays off in the end.

Writing a quality article does need your competence in the field.
Although this technique takes time I think this is worth to do.
Thanks for the advice.

Great idea, however, before spending lot of time writing an article you are passionate about and posting on some one's blog make sure the website or blog
is a 'do-follow'.
Thanks

Guest posting is a great way to get backlinks and exposure to your blog especially if the blog you guest post on is an A list blog. You will gain tons of traffic you provide a good article on the blog.

The problem I have is that guest make their comments, and the comment have nothing to do with the content on my site, they just want to say great article, or like your theme, or they just cut to the chase and write a add for their web site with a link, how can I stop that. I end up just deleting it or spamming the post. Don't people realize we both have to benefit? Also how or to what extent will google's sniffer penalize you for paid links?
