Effective Blog Commenting to Increase Page Rank
It’s amazing how many people do not know the principles of blog commenting. The concept of dofollow may be a fairly new concept – especially to those outside the SEO community – but if you don’t pay attention to this very important attribute, your blog commenting strategy will be for naught. It depends somewhat if you’re after traffic or better page rank, but my guess is that a lot of people are commenting for the page rank exposure, rather than the traffic (which can be slight). What other explanation can there be for the litany of people posting comments with stellar anchor text on a PR 0 blog that has nofollow for comment links? Obviously, these aspiring marketers have no idea that their links count for nothing.
So every blog commenter should devise a good strategy for commenting on blogs in order to get the most page rank value. Here are the main commenting tips:
1. Write a useful comment. Take as much time thinking about writing a comment as you’d think about writing a paragraph on your blog. A comment needs to be tailored to the post. Yes, people are desperate for comments, but vague comments get thrown out – like “Great post. I like your style.” (just wait for some smart a*s to write that comment on this post.)
2. Find a list of blogs in your niche. It’s recommended to go to a dofollow blog directory and find dofollowers in your niche. Narrow down those dofollow blogs by pinpointing the blogs with the highest page rank (in the Google toolbar, SEOQuake plugin, or other method).
3. Seek out blog posts that already have a good number of backlinks. Just because the blog’s homepage has a decent page rank doesn’t mean that every blog post will. There are cases where an internal blog post can have better rank than the homepage if that internal page gets a lot of links. Note: if it’s a new post, page rank won’t show up in a toolbar, but trackbacks will show up in the comment section. Also, the number of comments signifies its overall popularity.
4. Use Google reader or other RSS reader. This is a WAY better way to organize links than through standard browser bookmarks. Can’t recommend this enough. How many time have you gone to a browser bookmark only to find that the same frontpage post is still sitting there? Using a reader will organize posts based on their freshness. It’s easier to hop around between blog to blog to find places to comment. Really, commenting off a reader should be one of your daily marketing strategies. Whenever you find a blog with a good home page rank and dofollow comments (this is usually advertised), grab its RSS feed.
5. Subscribe to a thread when you comment. Someone might respond to you and then you can add another link and add to the discussion.
6. Look for sites that activate Commentluv, as this will add a link to an internal page. If you add Commentluv to your own site, you can choose which page to list. Otherwise, it will list your most recent post – which means after you post you should head over to your Commentluv site list and make another comment.
7. Find Top Commenter sites. Another plugin will show a blog’s top commenters (sort of irritatingly misspelled as “Top Commentators”). Often, it only takes 2 comments to make it to the list. Even sites that have nofollow enabled in comments will have dofollow for the top commenter list, so you shouldn’t always stay away from nofollow sites.
8. Make five comments a day, at least. This means you have to have a pretty big RSS feed list, because you can’t make five comments a day on the same two blogs. Over time, these comments will really build up. Added bonus: many of these comments will show up in your Technorati profile, improving your Technorati rank.

I have been doing this for a while and it has been working for me. It gives you a lot of traffic and subscribers. But I comment at least 30 to 40 times a day. It has been working though.
December 16th, 2008 at 1:15 am
Dofollow is helpful in comments especially on the topic is SEO. More readers will subscribe and join in on the commenting.

Google Reader is a must to survive with so much information to track on the web.
December 17th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Excellent post!
A couple more points:
You don’t necessarily have to link back to your main page. When you comment, you can provide a deep link if you prefer.
You don’t necessarily have to use your actual name in the name textbox. It’s better to use the keywords that match the link you’re providing.

Wow..these are great tips and you know what? I am using this technique to get traffic and intensify my visibility in search engines. Good work in relaying this valuable info. I salute you
December 22nd, 2008 at 6:19 am
Larry,
A lot of people use the name field to stuff in some keywords and while I guess this is good for SEO, I prefer just using my name.
I hate it when I get comments on my blog posts by people that call them selfs things like ‘cheap domain names’ or ‘buy xyz online’
December 22nd, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Blog commenting is a lot more powerful than most people think, even those that know about it.
I just got a brand new site to number 2 in Google for 500,000 competing pages with about 10 comments and a few trackbacks in less than a month!
I’ll have to wait and see if it stays there though…

An absolutely important aspect in pagerank and building a following. I have published a couple of blogs that really talk exactly about the importance of commenting.

The same with us we try to comment on various sites to help build our backlink count and exposure as well. While 5 a day is a good recommendation we also try to aim abit higher around 50 a day.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Great post. Using these methods to build your site up is a good idea but even more so blogging itself is about interaction so reading and commenting is key.

excellent post..although 5 per day will help you should aim at 20-30 per day, once you have a routine these comments are very quick to produce. 30 comments per day should only take 30mins or less once you have a routine.

Are you planning to blog more on this topic. I would like to learn more.
February 17th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
I have started commenting on blogs now partly for back links and partly for creating networks with other bloggers, it has started to show the benefits.

People are talking about posting 30-40 comments in a day but we should keep in mind that posting relevant and good comments can bring more traffic only.

April 14th, 2009 at 12:55 am
This is an interesting post. We use Google Reader and a couple of blog archives to do this.
The important thing to remember here is, just random link backs will just demotivate one.
If the subject matter is clear to the commenter, the better he would be able to write, and thus better chances of his comment being accepted!

I have been trying my hands at understanding SEO and its implications for quite a long time. Still quite a few terms are not fully clear to me.
One important principle I understood from this article: I have to leave a sensible, relevant comment to a post.
The dofollow is not clear to me. Can anyone help?
May 6th, 2009 at 10:51 am
Great article, but agree with previous comment, could someone elaborate on dofollow?
thanks
May 6th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
By default wordpress blogs have “nofollow” for links in post comments. The “nofollow” attribute tells Google not to crawl that link. So “dofollow” would be the opposite, and by default a link without “nofollow” will have Google following the link to the site.
For example:
href='http://www.practicalcontrol.co.uk' rel='external nofollow' class='url' rel="nofollow">Ed HoldsworthSo you wouldn’t have Google following your name to your site because of the “nofollow” in the link. Since linking to certain sites can affect your rank negatively, it’s usually a good idea to use this tag in comments where you can’t always control where you are linking to.
June 2nd, 2009 at 9:58 am
Excellent advice.
Threaded comments can now also be achieved without the use of a plugin. In your wp dashboard, go to Settings–>Discussion–>Other comment settings and check off the little box. You can even select how much depth you want to allow.
June 3rd, 2009 at 6:47 am
I do this a lot. I go blog hunting sometimes and I always comment on the post that I like. There are a lot of people that think that this is spamming but if you really want to know what spamming is, you should have taken a look at my blog before I set the moderate comments up. I had a comment by five different people that all went to the same site that said, all though I do not agree with you 100%, now this is spamming. I don’t think that it is a bad idea. If you want to visit and comment on my blog, I will happily except you. I am also a do-follow. I only delete comments that are stupid or don’t make any sense.

Hi.first i like to thank you for writing all these great tips on your site. Now i hv question . Where can we activate our commentluv ? Can everyone activate it and what it does to our blog ? tq . Another question is on your post on 50 simple ways for you to make your website – you mentioned about the 404 page. Now how do we get on to that page and add the search box. This is good tips cos in my cpanel, I find many visitors went into page 404. And I didnt know that we could add a post there. Pls email me at admin@cynthiaimageconsulting.com TQ

I have recently used a free software program called fast blog finder which is ok but still there are many no follow blogs out there. What is the best way to obtain free high PR links? Or should we be paying for them?
November 21st, 2009 at 3:56 am
I've always wondered about the people who post comments on my site and basically spam me with links or simply say “thanks great post” and nothing else. I generally don't bother leaving a comment unless it actually adds to the “conversation” I really need to read this blog more often (now bookmarked) Some great insights that I plan to put in play.
Thanks for sharing!

Great tips to improve SEOs. I believe working on LSI and keywords are also crucial in improving SEOs. Google has been mentioning about LSI in its SERP algorithm.

do you think it is a better strategy to post comments rather than just make more blogs.. which could then have links to the site you're trying to improve the seo of? does it actually get you a faster pr increase?
March 13th, 2010 at 4:41 am
Well these days almost every another webmaster knows the importance of backlinks and getting backlink via commenting on blogs, specially commenting on blogs with higher Page Ranks.
But this article has some additional information such as using RSS feed effectively to organizing the links, this was helping.
Mot of people are aware about different page rank for different page of blog. still lot of important information was provided.

Before I don't believe that blog commenting helps to rank blogs or websites. Most blogs out there have no follow on the comment section. I used to comment a lot on some blogs even on sites with nofollows on their comment section. Pinoy, Pre Order Video Game and Discount and coupons
To my surprise, even though it has nofollow, the backlink still shows in the search engines. Bad thing about having a dofollow plugin on your blogs make them susceptible to spammers. Worst these spams are usually porn sites or warez sites.
March 15th, 2010 at 9:02 am
Great tips, especially the 5th, 7th and 8th.
I've been commenting for 3 weeks, but I always had problems with finding new and related blogs. Do you know which is the best blog directory to start searching? I know, Google's my friend, but still, which directory do you suggest?

pushing wares, services, and even people, it is critical to be able to get the attention of the public. As such, there are various patterns of advertizement that have been used by many commercializing and packagings bureaus. These forms include tv, radio, and local newsprint campaigning. However, there are likewise different forms of campaigning that have become popular for the past years.

Useful tips. This should be memorized by heart by those who do blog commenting. Let's be sensitive sometimes, if we can't contribute to the topic then don't post anything. Let's respect their website since we just asking them a favor actually by linking our site to theirs. It's a two way street and both needs to work hand in hand.

Great methods, I have learned a lot looking around at your blog. I’m trying to get some of my sites more traffic and these tips are magical. Thanks!
June 6th, 2010 at 6:29 pm
I’m not 100% on this, but I do like the idea. Comment luv seems to work for everyone involved.
June 6th, 2010 at 7:42 pm
I read this post a few months ago, and set out to try your suggestions. After posting at least 5 to 6 blog comments per day over a few months, I have found that the number of back links to my site have increased significantly, traffic has also increased (a bit) but, so far, my PageRank has remained at a dead flat 0.
I've been targetting blogs with dofollow and generally reasonable backlinks or pagerank for the blog page of 2 or 3 PR. Most of my comments have been accepted as I've left thoughful comments relating to the topic.
Perhaps my downfall has been that there are a limited number of blogs relating to the topic of my site, so I've only been able to get a handful of backlinks that directly relate to my site. The others are "loosely" related or a few not at all.
Is this likely to be my problem? Google indicates I've gone from around 10 backlinks to over 5000 so far and the site is over a year old now.
June 11th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
I'm going to attempt these steps right now. Link building has always been a trouble spot for me, but I think this sounds like it may work. Thanks.

Ok, I have a question for those of you in the know. What is the observed rule with posting keywords in the name column. Is this a big no no or should you do it??? As with everything SEO I have read conflicting pieces for and against this practice, what does everyone think???

The short answer is, sites and blogs that align with your own closely will always provide richer backlinks than those loosely related or not related to your site at all. Obviously pagerank can play a part in terms of how authorative a site is, in the eyes of Google, but your focus should be on getting relevant links rather than just any links, if they aren't relevant then the pagerank juice wont do much at all.

This is great info, commenting on blogs is a great way to build backlinks. Not only will it increase your page rank it will also increase your rankings if you include an anchor text keyword. But make sure the blog allows it and also has commentluv plugin
