You mentioned wordpress plugins. Askimet works great for comment spam. It's already in wordpress you just need an API key to unlock it. You can get this by simply registering with wordpress. The other thing is moderating comments. I don't let comments auto post. Normally it's pretty easy to tell if a comment is spam. It it's not obvouis Viagra spam or something usually it will say something like "great post admin thanks" then I send them to spam. After awhile Askimet gets pretty good at catching most of the comment spam and you can just mass delete all spam comments at one time.
