I've used the long sales letter before, but don't like them anymore. I have one more I have to get rid of. I think using videos is much more effective as a sales tool. It can do the same things as the long sales letter, but it's more effective. We now live in a time where people are lazy. They don't want to read long letters.

You bring up a lot of great points, and I couldn't agree more with your point that each page needs a call to action. ion interactive recently interviewed Roberta Rosenberg, the original Copywriting Maven, on this subject! you might want to check it out: http://www.ioninteractive.com/post-click-marketin...

I've often looked at these landing pages and found them quite off-putting, but whatever my own feelings, it's clear that they work. These guys I'm sure research all possible variations, and the numbers don't lie.

I was also interested in Sarah's comment above about breaking up the pitch into several email newsletters.

My first thought was that I hadn't seen that yet - but looking back through my emails I see that I have! I just hadn't noticed :)

A very good analysis of why they work. The tests show they convert. However, I've just been struggling with assessing how well they do in overall relationship-based marketing when you have an established list that you have developed a certain rapport with. In this case, I think Jeff Walker's Product Launch Formula which breaks these long letters down into an ongoing conversation works extremely well. Also, I've noticed the use of summaries early on in sidebars to allow early converters to move quickly to purchase. This is in addition to call to actions peppered throughout.

they are very very spammy for my taste and never bought anything from sites like that. I start feeling instantly that they consider me an idiot. It is so obvious they try to blurr my mind that I close it almost right away. BTW. When I want to buy something I will buy it. Because that's what I want to do. But convincing me about the wonderful, magical, stuff ... No way!
