We’ve been through this before. There are hundreds of millions of blogs out there. No matter what niche you’re in, you’re probably competing against thousands of other blogs that cover the same subject and talk about the same things you’re talking about.
So, what can you do to make your blog stand apart from the rest? What quality can you add to your blog that makes readers turn to it over all others?
You have to find the right voice for your blog.
Simply put, your blog needs a distinct voice that resonates with your target audience…a voice that instantly lets readers know this is your blog and there’s no other blog out there quite like it.
But finding the right voice for your blog can be tough. Here are some of the things you can do to capture a unique voice for your blog.
- Make a list of traits you want your blog to have—Make a list of personality attributes you want your blog to have. Try to narrow that list down to the top few characteristics, and really focus on weaving that into the writing style of every post you publish.
- Add plenty of yourself in your writing—It sounds simple enough, but too many bloggers don’t do it. Just be yourself. Let your personality shine through in your writing. If you’re a witty, smarty pants in real life, try incorporating some of that in your writing. Being yourself is the easiest way to create a unique voice for your blog.
- Take a look at your most successful posts—Every blog has a few posts that are far more popular than the rest. Take a look back at your most successful posts and try to identify what makes them different from your other posts. Do they have a different voice? Talk about a particular subject? Take a certain attitude or point of view? If you can nail down what makes these posts successful and emulate that voice, you’re well on your way to building something special.
- Devil is in the details—Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that define your blog’s voice. It can be the way you use punctuation, or it could be certain phrases you like to include in your writing. Pay attention to the details of your writing, and try to build consistency throughout your posts.
Does your blog have its own voice? Describe it in the comments.
